Mother language means a language through which the people of a country express their idea, thoughts, feeling and emotions spontaneously. It is a heavenly/ divine gift. It is said in the holy Quran that the most Merciful Almighty has bestowed a mother tongue upon each and every person irrespective of caste, creed and color “Bangla” is our mother tongue. But we did not achieve it overnight. It has a long glorious historical background. It is a matter of great regret that, the then Pakistani ruler Zinnah tried to impose “Urdu “as the state language upon us instead of Bangla. But the people of country especially the students raised their voice against this unjust decision. Some of the heroic sons of this soil came forward for the cause of the mother tongue on the 21st February, 1952. And they laid down their lives to establish “Bangla” as the official language of the country. That’s way, the 21st February is observed as language martyred day or “shaheed day”. Every year we remember this day with solemnity and pay them profound tribute. Now it is a Mather of great pleasure and prestige that this day got international recognition in 1999 as International mother language day. So the importance of the day transcends the national boundary and becomes universal. Now it is observed with great honors’ all over the world. Being inspired by the spirit of the day. We should pay homage to language martyrs all the year round. We should also take necessary steps to uplift our mother tongue all over the nation.
